Why Choose a Pre-Owned Chevy Silverado?

That’s a great question, and we’re glad you asked because, honestly, it’s something a lot of people don’t consider enough. They might choose a pre-owned vehicle—or avoid one—without ever really weighing the benefits and advantages that investing in something like a used Chevy Silverado 1500 really offers.

And while most people might not care whether others question that or not, as a new and used Chevy dealer, we love getting the chance to talk about the many benefits that you get to enjoy by choosing a pre-owned Silverado. Some of these are pretty obvious, but others can be easy to overlook if it’s not something you stop to think about. So, let’s discuss why you should consider a pre-owned Silverado 1500 over a new one…

Start With the Price

It would be silly for us to start with anything else because we know that, for many people, the biggest reason to choose any pre-owned vehicle is the lower price—and this is just as true for the Chevy Silverado. There are two benefits here, however, so it’s worth noting both of them. The first is rather obvious, which is that a pre-owned Silverado 1500 will generally cost less than a new model with the same trim and features. This is a big win if you’re shopping on a budget since it means you can save some money or make your budget stretch further to get things that would be out of reach on a new Chevy truck.

The second benefit can be harder to see, but it’s that a used truck can represent a better overall value and investment for many drivers. Not only are you paying less upfront, but you’re also skipping out on a lot of initial depreciation, which is where this lower price comes from. That means that, even though your truck might still depreciate (as there’s not much you can do about that), it can retain more of its value. So your budget can stretch further, and you ultimately get more value out of a used truck since its price holds up better over time.

Many Options to Choose From

One of the things we love most about the modern Chevy lineup is just how much freedom you have for amazing features and options. This is true for pretty much every Chevy vehicle, but few exemplify this as perfectly as the Silverado 1500. Looking at the 2021 model as an example, we find six different powertrain options available, including two versions of the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 and a diesel engine. Each of those can deliver different performance and capability, giving you a lot of options to play with when shopping for your next truck.

On top of those engine options, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 is available in eight different trim levels, not to mention a wide range of configurations between different cab sizes and bed lengths. In addition to all of that, we can also see about a half dozen special editions available for the 2021 model, like the Midnight Edition and RST Rally. That’s just one example, but it’s something you can find with just about every model year for the Silverado 1500, which gives you an incredible range of trucks to shop from.

Some people worry that looking for a used truck means they’re missing out on something compared to shopping for new models. While it’s true that you don’t necessarily get the freedom to customize your vehicle like you can with a new truck, instead, you get an absolutely massive selection of trucks offered to you. The Chevy Silverado is one of the best-selling trucks in America every year, which means that just looking at the last four model years gives you a huge range of pickups to choose from.

Older Features and Options

This might seem a little counterintuitive, but for some people, one of the biggest perks of shopping for a pre-owned Silverado is that you’ll get older features on your truck. Not everyone cares about things like a big infotainment display or other tech features that have been added in recent years. The 2022 and later models all have standard 7.0-inch screens with much larger 13.4-inch displays on higher trims. Prior to that, the 7.0-inch screen was standard for several years, but with just an 8.0-inch display on higher-end models. For drivers who don’t want a big screen in the center of their dashboard, being able to choose from some of these older features is quite attractive.

Maximizing a Diesel Engine

For us, one of the best reasons to choose a Chevy Silverado 1500—new or used—is for the incredible 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine that’s been available for many years now. This beast has been delivering impressive muscle and performance for more than a generation, making it a tremendous option for drivers looking for bold power and reliability. Diesel engines are well known for lasting a long time; while some engines are getting a bit long in the tooth at 100,000 miles, a diesel that’s been properly cared for is just getting started.

By going with a pre-owned Silverado with its available diesel engine, you get an incredible powertrain that can last a lifetime. As we mentioned, you want to make sure it’s been properly cared for, which means it has had maintenance performed on it regularly; that’s why it’s important you shop at a dealership you can trust to ensure you get to choose from great vehicles in the best shape possible. This year, the Chevy Silverado is the only one of the top three full-size trucks that still offers a diesel; both the F-150 and Ram 1500 no longer have diesel powertrains, so this is a major perk for Chevy drivers.

Perfect for Work and Play

One of our favorite things about the Chevy Silverado 1500 is that it’s not only an incredible workhorse, but it’s also a great truck for enjoying your time off—a used model even more so. Looking for a great truck to enjoy some tailgating on the weekend? The impressive bed lengths and payload capacities available for the Silverado make it the perfect option that you can load up with coolers, grilling equipment, and more. And if you’re looking to head out onto the trail and go off-roading or do some camping, then the Silverado 1500 is perfect for that, too.

For years now, Chevy has offered numerous off-road trims on the Silverado, including different Trail Bosses and the incredible ZR2, which means you can find a wide range of different pre-owned Chevy trucks ready to hit the trail, even if the previous owner never left the pavement behind with it. And if you want to further customize your truck to achieve even greater off-road capability, then the Silverado is perfect for that, too.
